Year 6 Science
Scientific enquiry
Throughout these topics the children will carry out complete investigations. They will have opportunities to make predictions using scientific knowledge and understanding; choose what evidence to collect and what equipment to use. They will make careful and relevant observations and measurements and decide when these need to be checked by repeating to give more reliable results. Data will be recorded in their own tables and graphs, and conclusions drawn with reasoned explanations.
Life processes and living things
Micro-organisms
- Harmful micro-organisms cause illness and decay
- Beneficial micro-organisms can be used in food production
Enquiry in environmental contexts
Materials and their properties
More about dissolving
- Factors that affect the rate of dissolving
Reversible and irreversible changes
- Classify melting, freezing, evaporation, dissolving and condensing as reversible changes
- Irreversible changes such as burning produce new materials
Physical processes
Forces in action
- Gravitational attraction, weight and friction (including air resistance)
Electrical circuits
- Use of circuit diagrams and conventional symbols
- Changing the current in a circuit
